Ah, sweet relief.
By now you have probably heard of the San Francisco freeway collapse after a tanker-truck exploded in the wee hours of Sunday morning. The collapse was in an area called The Maze. Of course, we were blissfully unaware of this remarkable accident as we were puttering around the kitchen getting our picnic nosh put together for our trip into San Francisco (see previous post).
It's 7am. Fortunately, I happened to have the TV on in the living room for something to listen to as I cut up pineapple. As I'm chopping away I hear, "OH NO!" Kandy is staring at the crawler across the top of the screen that says the roads leading from the East Bay to the toll plaza are closed. Then we see video of what the freeway looks like. Oi.
"I guess we're taking a different - much longer - route into the City," I'm thinking.
So we did - what normally takes us about 35 minutes, took us nearly 90 minutes to go across the San Mateo Bridge and then up from the south into SF. It was actually a lovely trip - just a bit long. The day was a little grey on the Bay, a little cool, but quite lovely.
We were very much rewarded when we met old friends, shared wine and laughter. We noshed on imported cheeses, Boudin sour dough bread, local fruits - strawberries - yum! We shared stories and revelled in each other's company. It was a wonderful way to enjoy a birthday. I'll not soon forget it.
