Alameda County Superior Court Wants You!

That is, Alameda County Superior Court wants me - for jury duty. Do they really know what they want?

I think not.
I received The Summons a couple of weeks ago. Said paperwork has been hanging on my board, menacing me everytime I walked by, insideously whispering my name.

You might think that I don't want to do my duty. This is not the case. No, no. My reason is much more mundane than that: I do not want to fight 25 miles of traffic between here and the county courthouse. Every morning when I ride my bike a measley 2 miles to work, I use the overpass of the 580 freeway - the freeway is 4 lanes wide on each side, and the cars are stacked up in stop-and-go fashion heading West. It's a nightmare commute. Normally, I could take BART to my destination, but BART doesn't go anywhere near this courthouse. Of course it doesn't. If I took BART, I'd have to catch a transit bus. Uck.

Well, not all is set in stone, just yet. My duty is supposed to begin on Tuesday, July 11th, Contingent upon a call I make to hear a recording tomorrow evening regarding my Group number. I could be dismissed. I could be directed to report to yet a different court. Or not. I am at their impersonal mercy, which is to say there is no mercy, just luck.

You don't suppose they'd have wireless Internet access there, do you?
Yeah. Right.
Sigh.

(Update: I've been excused for the AM, but I have to call them again between 11 and noon on Tuesday. I feel like I'm being strung along...)
