A Photo Show and Tell

I was meandering through some pixilated pictures when I came across this photo of our good friend Lori posing with author Terry McMillan. Lori was instrumental in bringing Ms. McMillan to the girls' elementary school for our Bedtime Story Event. (I apologize for the lousy cropping, but a third person was in the photo, the elementary school's former principal. Seems that there were some goings on that had a little show-and-tell of their own. She is no longer employed in our school district.)

It continues to amaze me how wonderful it is to live where we do. A lot of well-known creative, expressive and even successful people live within a 75 mile radius. What is truly surprising is how accessible they are to schools and to the kids. It's almost as if all one needs to do is make them aware that we'd like them to come out to our school for such-and-such event, and if they can schedule it, they do. Some even go out of their way for local requests - they don't usually ask for a fee or anything. They just want to do community service.

When I was a kid, I think we had one or two "famous" folk come talk to an assembly, or perform. I know I appreciated it - but, I usually didn't know who the heck these people were. It didn't really matter to me then. Now that I am a Mom, though, I do wish I knew who those people were.

Youth is just too ignorant!

Ms. McMillan brought her son with her - he's in his twenties - which made for some humorous exchanges. A delightful evening.
